SWA 4

For this assignment I will analyze "Gen Y's Ego Trip Takes a Bad Turn" by Larry Gordon and Louis Sahagun.
Text.  This is an essay that argues the emergence of narcissism among generation Y adolescents.  Although it does seem biased, the authors provide evidence for both sides of their argument, forming the argument in a questioning manner.
Reader or Audience.  The authors target the readers of the Los Angeles Times, more particularly the ones most interested in the current issue of Generation Y narcissism.  Because most of the readers of the Times would be from older generations, the article is more apt to convince them of the point.  I would not be the typical reader because I do not come in contact with the Los Angeles Times on a frequent basis.
Author.  No background is given for the authors, so the reader is left to assume they are frequent writers for the LA Times.  The authors are most likely influenced by personal experience with the issue.
Constraints.  The author is constrained by the idea that narcissism is bad in the world we live in, which may not be the case.  However, they do provide examples to the contrary, probably to distance themselves from the issue.
Exigence.  The writers noticed an elevation in narcissism with the emergence of Generation Y.  They believe this to be a bad thing, however they have not provided support for that conclusion.
